Operating margin is operating income as a share of revenue. Free cash flow is cash from operations minus capital spending. Return on equity is net income as a share of shareholders' equity. Market cap is the last closing share price times the latest diluted share count, so it is approximate. P/E is the last close divided by diluted earnings per share over the last four quarters, or the latest fiscal year where the quarters aren't available; there is none when the company made a loss.

Charts show fiscal years, from the 10-K filings.

What Aeluma does

Aeluma develops light-based chip technology for communications and sensing. Its products include photodetectors, which sense near-infrared and shortwave infrared light, and lasers and optical amplifiers built on quantum dot technology. It aims to sell to makers of AI data center networking gear, mobile and consumer devices, defense and aerospace systems, and quantum technology.

Aeluma makes its materials on large silicon and gallium arsenide wafers, which fit the factories that build mainstream microelectronics. It does its materials growth, prototyping and testing in a cleanroom in Goleta, California, and uses outside foundries, including Tower Semiconductor and Sumitomo Chemical Advanced Technologies, for wafer production.

The company says it is moving from mainly research and development toward selling products. Its revenue now comes mostly from U.S. government development contracts, plus small commercial orders for wafers, chips, engineering samples and engineering services. It says customers usually test and qualify a new part for a long time before ordering volume. It competes with large image-sensor makers such as Sony and Samsung and with makers of conventional infrared sensors such as Hamamatsu and Teledyne FLIR.

Its biggest risks, as it describes them

  • It is early-stage and not yet in volume production for any product, with continuing net losses.
  • Its revenue depends heavily on U.S. federal government contracts.
  • It depends on a few customers and on outside manufacturers for parts of its production.
  • It may need more money, which could dilute shareholders or be unavailable on good terms.
  • It reported material weaknesses in its internal control over financial reporting.

Rule of 40: revenue growth plus free cash flow margin; software investors treat 40% or more as the bar. Altman Z'': working capital, retained earnings, operating income and equity weighed against assets and liabilities (Altman, 1995); Altman puts above 2.6 in the safe zone and below 1.1 in the distress zone. Accruals ratio: net income minus cash from operations, over average total assets; lower means profit is backed by cash.
