Operating margin is operating income as a share of revenue. Free cash flow is cash from operations minus capital spending. Return on capital is after-tax operating income as a share of the money invested in the business: debt plus equity, minus cash. Market cap is the last closing share price times the latest diluted share count, so it is approximate. P/E is the last close divided by diluted earnings per share over the last four quarters, or the latest fiscal year where the quarters aren't available; there is none when the company made a loss.

Charts show fiscal years, from the 10-K filings.

What Amtech Systems does

Amtech Systems makes equipment, supplies and services for making and packaging semiconductor chips. Its customers are chip packaging, electronics assembly and chip fabrication companies around the world. Its equipment is used for chips such as the graphics processors used in AI, and for silicon carbide and silicon power chips.

It reports two segments. Thermal Processing Solutions, the larger one, sells reflow ovens that bond chips to their packages and circuit boards, high-temperature belt furnaces, and diffusion furnaces used in wafer production. Semiconductor Fabrication Solutions sells polishing supplies, cleaning chemicals, wafer-cleaning equipment, parts and services used to make flat, smooth wafers. Selling supplies and services helps it offset the swings in equipment orders.

Amtech builds its ovens and furnaces in its own plant in Shanghai and through contract manufacturers in China, Canada and Singapore. It sells worldwide: in 2025, 71% of its net revenue came from customers outside North America. The company says it is relatively small and competes with firms that have more financial and other resources.

Its biggest risks, as it describes them

  • Swings in the semiconductor equipment industry, where customers slow their equipment purchases when they have spare capacity.
  • Competing against larger firms with more financial and other resources.
  • Relying on a few major customers, often selling to them on credit terms.
  • Its heavy dependence on customers outside North America, including in China.
  • U.S. export controls and tariffs that could hurt its business in China.

Piotroski F-score: how many of nine simple tests of profitability, funding and efficiency the company passed in the year (Piotroski, 2000); 8 or 9 is strong, 0 to 2 weak. Rule of 40: revenue growth plus free cash flow margin; software investors treat 40% or more as the bar. Altman Z'': working capital, retained earnings, operating income and equity weighed against assets and liabilities (Altman, 1995); Altman puts above 2.6 in the safe zone and below 1.1 in the distress zone. Accruals ratio: net income minus cash from operations, over average total assets; lower means profit is backed by cash.
