Return on equity is net income as a share of shareholders' equity; return on tangible equity leaves out goodwill and other intangible assets. The efficiency ratio is operating costs as a share of revenue, so lower means the bank spends less to earn each dollar. Market cap is the last closing share price times the latest diluted share count, so it is approximate. P/E is the last close divided by diluted earnings per share over the last four quarters, or the latest fiscal year where the quarters aren't available; there is none when the company made a loss.

What Bank of Hawaii does

Bank of Hawai'i is the main subsidiary of a bank holding company based in Honolulu. The bank was organized in 1897 and offers a broad range of financial products and services, mainly to customers in Hawai'i, Guam and other Pacific Islands. Its deposits are insured by the FDIC, and it is regulated as a bank and as a holding company.

The company is organized into three business segments: Consumer Banking, Commercial Banking, and Treasury and Other. Like most banks, it takes in deposits and lends them out as loans, and earns the difference in interest along with fees for its services. Its loan portfolio is largely secured by real estate, with much of it in Hawai'i and the West Pacific.

The company says its business depends heavily on the local economies of the islands it serves, and on federal government activity there, including defense spending.

Its biggest risks, as it describes them

  • A downturn in the economy of Hawai'i, Guam and other Pacific Islands, where it does most of its business.
  • A drop in real estate values, because most of its loans are secured by real estate.
  • Cuts in federal defense spending in Hawai'i and the West Pacific.
  • Changes in interest rates that squeeze what it earns on loans.
  • Setting aside too little to cover loans that are not repaid.

Grants, option exercises and shares withheld for tax aren't counted. Insiders buy and sell for many reasons, such as taxes, spreading their savings or a plan set up months earlier, so a trade on its own says little about where a company is heading.
