BankUnited
BankUnited's revenue rose 7.9% to $1.1 billion in fiscal 2025. Net income was $268 million, up 15.4%. Its return on equity was 9.2%, up from 8.6% a year earlier. Its efficiency ratio was 60.7%, down from 63.4% a year earlier. It paid out $137 million in dividends and buybacks. The diluted share count rose 0.4%.
Return on equity is net income as a share of shareholders' equity; return on tangible equity leaves out goodwill and other intangible assets. The efficiency ratio is operating costs as a share of revenue, so lower means the bank spends less to earn each dollar. Market cap is the last closing share price times the latest diluted share count, so it is approximate. P/E is the last close divided by diluted earnings per share over the last four quarters, or the latest fiscal year where the quarters aren't available; there is none when the company made a loss.

What BankUnited does
BankUnited is a bank holding company with total assets of $35.0 billion at the end of 2025. Its one subsidiary, BankUnited, is a national bank based in Miami Lakes, Florida, with operations in Florida, the New York tri-state area, Dallas, Atlanta and Charlotte. It serves individuals, small businesses, middle-market companies, large corporations and institutions, and offers some commercial lending and deposit products nationally and some consumer deposits online.
Its main focus is lending to small, middle-market and larger businesses. Commercial loans include lines of credit, equipment loans, owner-occupied commercial real estate loans, mortgage warehouse lines and subscription finance facilities. Two lending subsidiaries do equipment financing: Pinnacle, which finances state and local governments, and Bridge, which finances business and franchise equipment and is being de-emphasized. It also makes commercial real estate loans, mostly on apartments, industrial buildings, warehouses and shopping centers, and has pulled back on office lending.
BankUnited does not originate residential mortgages. It buys them, mainly closed-end first-lien jumbo loans, through correspondent channels and community partners. It says its strategy is to build a regional commercial and small business bank, and that it has grown mostly on its own rather than by acquisitions.
Its biggest risks, as it describes them
- Failing to realize the expected benefits of its business strategy.
- Credit losses as a lender, and an allowance for credit losses that may not be adequate.
- Strong competition from other financial institutions.
- Concerns about the stability of other regional and mid-size banks.
- A credit rating downgrade, or being unable to raise capital when needed.
Income statement
From fiscal 2016 to 2025, earnings per share grew 6.0% a year and net income 1.9% a year, as buybacks cut the share count by 28%.
