City
City's revenue rose 7.0% to $314 million in fiscal 2025. Net income was $130 million, up 11.4%. Its return on equity was 16.9%, up from 16.6% a year earlier. Its efficiency ratio was 49.0%, down from 50.1% a year earlier. It paid out $93 million in dividends and buybacks. The diluted share count fell 1.5%.
Return on equity is net income as a share of shareholders' equity; return on tangible equity leaves out goodwill and other intangible assets. The efficiency ratio is operating costs as a share of revenue, so lower means the bank spends less to earn each dollar. Market cap is the last closing share price times the latest diluted share count, so it is approximate. P/E is the last close divided by diluted earnings per share over the last four quarters, or the latest fiscal year where the quarters aren't available; there is none when the company made a loss.

What City does
City Holding is a financial holding company based in Charleston, West Virginia. It runs one bank, City National Bank of West Virginia, with 96 branches in West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia and southeastern Ohio. The company reports one segment, community banking.
The bank sells four kinds of services. Commercial banking covers business loans, commercial real estate loans, construction loans and cash management. Consumer banking covers checking, savings and money market accounts, certificates of deposit, retirement accounts, and installment and real estate loans. Mortgage banking covers fixed and adjustable-rate home loans and construction financing. Wealth and investment management covers trusts, estates, investment accounts and retirement plan services.
Like most banks, it earns money mainly from the interest on its loans and securities, less what it pays on deposits, and from fees for its services. It offers credit cards and merchant card services through agreements with outside vendors. It says its customer base is diverse. The bank has 934 full-time equivalent employees.
Its biggest risks, as it describes them
- Weak local economies and falling real estate values that leave loans under-collateralized.
- Borrowers failing to repay loans, and an allowance for credit losses that may prove too small.
- Changes in interest rates that affect its earnings.
- Competition from other banks and from nonbank alternatives for customers.
- Heavy regulation, which also limits the dividends it can pay.
Income statement
From fiscal 2016 to 2025, earnings per share grew 11.1% a year and net income 10.7% a year, as buybacks cut the share count by 3%.
