Eagle Bancorp
Eagle Bancorp's revenue fell 3.1% to $299 million in fiscal 2025. Net income was −$138 million. Its return on equity was −11.7%, down from −3.8% a year earlier. Its efficiency ratio was 67.1%, down from 89.0% a year earlier. It paid out $15 million in dividends and buybacks. The diluted share count rose 0.6%.
Return on equity is net income as a share of shareholders' equity; return on tangible equity leaves out goodwill and other intangible assets. The efficiency ratio is operating costs as a share of revenue, so lower means the bank spends less to earn each dollar. Market cap is the last closing share price times the latest diluted share count, so it is approximate. P/E is the last close divided by diluted earnings per share over the last four quarters, or the latest fiscal year where the quarters aren't available; there is none when the company made a loss.

What Eagle Bancorp does
Eagle Bancorp is the bank holding company for EagleBank, a Maryland-chartered commercial bank. The company is based in Bethesda, Maryland, and was formed in 1997 by local business people and professionals; the bank opened in 1998.
The bank serves the Washington, D.C. area through twelve branches: six in suburban Maryland, three in the District of Columbia and three in Northern Virginia. It also has four lending centers and offers remote deposit and mobile banking. It makes money mainly from interest on loans funded by customer deposits, and a significant part of its loan book is secured by commercial properties.
The bank owns a few small subsidiaries. One holds real estate acquired through foreclosure, one receives fees from an insurance referral program, and Landroval Municipal Finance focuses on lending to municipalities.
Its biggest risks, as it describes them
- A large part of its loans are secured by commercial properties, so weak property markets could hurt it.
- Its reserve for credit losses rests on estimates and may not cover actual losses.
- It faces competition for deposits and could see customers withdraw large deposits.
- Deposits above the insured limit may be more likely to leave the bank.
- Failing to meet capital and regulatory requirements would hurt its business.
Income statement
From fiscal 2016 to 2023, earnings per share grew 2.1% a year and net income 0.4% a year, as buybacks cut the share count by 11%. Eagle Bancorp then lost money in fiscal 2024 and 2025.
