Return on equity is net income as a share of shareholders' equity; return on tangible equity leaves out goodwill and other intangible assets. The efficiency ratio is operating costs as a share of revenue, so lower means the bank spends less to earn each dollar. Market cap is the last closing share price times the latest diluted share count, so it is approximate. P/E is the last close divided by diluted earnings per share over the last four quarters, or the latest fiscal year where the quarters aren't available; there is none when the company made a loss.

What Hilltop does

Hilltop Holdings is a Texas-based financial holding company in Dallas. Its main business is banking for businesses and consumers through its bank, PlainsCapital Bank, with offices across Texas. It also has a securities broker-dealer and a mortgage lending business.

It reports three segments: banking, broker-dealer and mortgage origination. The bank offers traditional banking plus wealth, investment and treasury management services, and makes home loans across the country. Its securities arm, Securities Holdings, does investment banking, municipal advisory work, trading and underwriting of bonds, clearing, securities lending, structured finance and retail brokerage. Its income comes from interest on loans and investments, from fees, and from trading and mortgage activity.

At the end of 2025 it had total assets of $15.8 billion, total deposits of $10.9 billion and total loans, including loans held for sale, of $9.2 billion. It says it may grow through acquisitions as well as organic growth.

Its biggest risks, as it describes them

  • Borrowers not repaying loans, with allowances for credit losses turning out too low.
  • Swings in mortgage lending, which move with interest rates and the housing market.
  • Results in its securities and broker-dealer business that depend on financial markets.
  • Strict banking and securities regulation.
  • Concentration of its banking in Texas.

Open-market purchases and sales by officers, directors and 10% owners, from their Form 4 filings with the SEC: one row per person, day and filing, at the day's average price. Grants, option exercises and shares withheld for tax aren't counted. Insiders buy and sell for many reasons, such as taxes, spreading their savings or a plan set up months earlier, so a trade on its own says little about where a company is heading.
