Operating margin is operating income as a share of revenue. Free cash flow is cash from operations minus capital spending. Return on capital is after-tax operating income as a share of the money invested in the business: debt plus equity, minus cash. Market cap is the last closing share price times the latest diluted share count, so it is approximate. P/E is the last close divided by diluted earnings per share over the last four quarters, or the latest fiscal year where the quarters aren't available; there is none when the company made a loss.

Charts show fiscal years, from the 10-K filings.

What Boise Cascade does

Boise Cascade distributes building materials and makes engineered wood products and plywood in North America. Its products go into new homes, including single-family, multi-family and manufactured homes, into repair and remodeling work, and into light industrial and commercial buildings. Its customers include dealers, home improvement centers, wholesalers, specialty distributors and industrial converters.

It has two segments. Building Materials Distribution runs a nationwide network of distribution facilities that sell commodity products such as oriented strand board, plywood and lumber, general line items such as siding, decking, doors, millwork, roofing and insulation, and engineered wood products. Wood Products makes laminated veneer lumber, I-joists and laminated beams, plus plywood panels and ponderosa pine lumber.

The two segments work closely together. Building Materials Distribution is the biggest customer of Wood Products, taking about 75% of the volume it produces, and the company says this lets it earn a margin at both levels of the supply chain. Its distribution growth has come from adding products, opening locations and buying businesses, such as door and millwork distributor BROSCO in 2023.

Its biggest risks, as it describes them

  • Market-set prices for the commodity products it buys, resells or makes.
  • Strong competition, and demand lost to competing materials or changes in building codes.
  • Dependence on outside suppliers and on transportation services.
  • Trouble getting wood fiber at good prices, and labor shortages or higher labor costs.
  • Falling demand for the residual byproducts of its manufacturing.

Piotroski F-score: how many of nine simple tests of profitability, funding and efficiency the company passed in the year (Piotroski, 2000); 8 or 9 is strong, 0 to 2 weak. Rule of 40: revenue growth plus free cash flow margin; software investors treat 40% or more as the bar. Altman Z'': working capital, retained earnings, operating income and equity weighed against assets and liabilities (Altman, 1995); Altman puts above 2.6 in the safe zone and below 1.1 in the distress zone. Accruals ratio: net income minus cash from operations, over average total assets; lower means profit is backed by cash.
