Operating margin is operating income as a share of revenue. Free cash flow is cash from operations minus capital spending. Return on capital is after-tax operating income as a share of the money invested in the business: debt plus equity, minus cash. Market cap is the last closing share price times the latest diluted share count, so it is approximate. P/E is the last close divided by diluted earnings per share over the last four quarters, or the latest fiscal year where the quarters aren't available; there is none when the company made a loss.

Charts show fiscal years, from the 10-K filings.

What Deluxe does

Deluxe describes itself as a payments and data company that serves small and medium-sized businesses, financial institutions and large consumer brands, mainly in North America. It was founded 110 years ago and still earns more than half of its revenue from printed products.

It reports four segments. Print is the largest, at 53.3% of 2025 revenue, and covers printed checks, business forms and other business products, and promotional items. Merchant Services, at 18.7%, offers in-store, online and mobile payment tools. Data Solutions, at 14.4%, provides data analytics and marketing services. B2B Payments, at 13.6%, covers treasury management, accounts payable payments and related fraud and security services.

It has pulled back from some businesses. In 2023 it sold its web hosting and logo design businesses and agreed to leave payroll and human resources services, with customers moved to other providers by 2024. It says this lets it focus on its growth businesses.

Its biggest risks, as it describes them

  • A long-term growth plan that may not work.
  • Falling use of checks and business forms that it may not offset with profitable growth.
  • Intense competition and the need to keep up with changing technology.
  • Struggling to win and keep customers at a reasonable cost.
  • Relying on its brand, which could be hurt.

Grants, option exercises and shares withheld for tax aren't counted. Piotroski F-score: how many of nine simple tests of profitability, funding and efficiency the company passed in the year (Piotroski, 2000); 8 or 9 is strong, 0 to 2 weak. Rule of 40: revenue growth plus free cash flow margin; software investors treat 40% or more as the bar. Altman Z'': working capital, retained earnings, operating income and equity weighed against assets and liabilities (Altman, 1995); Altman puts above 2.6 in the safe zone and below 1.1 in the distress zone. Accruals ratio: net income minus cash from operations, over average total assets; lower means profit is backed by cash.
