Operating margin is operating income as a share of revenue. Free cash flow is cash from operations minus capital spending. Return on capital is after-tax operating income as a share of the money invested in the business: debt plus equity, minus cash. Market cap is the last closing share price times the latest diluted share count, so it is approximate. P/E is the last close divided by diluted earnings per share over the last four quarters, or the latest fiscal year where the quarters aren't available; there is none when the company made a loss.

Charts show fiscal years, from the 10-K filings.

What Encore Capital Group does

Encore Capital buys portfolios of defaulted consumer debt and collects on them. Defaulted receivables are unpaid consumer obligations owed to banks, credit unions, consumer finance companies and retailers, and the company buys them at deep discounts to face value. It then works with the people who owe the money as they repay and recover financially.

It earns money from what it collects on the portfolios it buys, and in Europe also from servicing non-performing loans for the lenders that own them. In the United States it operates through Midland Credit Management (MCM). In Europe and the United Kingdom it operates through Cabot Credit Management (Cabot). Smaller operations in India and Mexico are not significant to its results.

The company says it plans to keep investing in portfolio buying and recovery in the United States and United Kingdom and to build its business in France and Spain. It is based in San Diego, California.

Its biggest risks, as it describes them

  • Weak economic conditions can make it harder for consumers to repay, hurting collections.
  • It may be unable to buy portfolios at good prices, or may lose supply if a main seller buys less.
  • Portfolios may turn out unprofitable, and its models of future cash flows may prove wrong.
  • A large part of its collections relies on lawsuits against consumers, which raises costs and legal exposure.
  • Rising consumer bankruptcies or changes in bankruptcy law could reduce what it collects.

Open-market purchases and sales by officers, directors and 10% owners, from their Form 4 filings with the SEC: one row per person, day and filing, at the day's average price. Grants, option exercises and shares withheld for tax aren't counted. Insiders buy and sell for many reasons, such as taxes, spreading their savings or a plan set up months earlier, so a trade on its own says little about where a company is heading.
