Hope Bancorp
Hope Bancorp's revenue rose 5.0% to $499 million in fiscal 2025. Net income was $62 million, down 38.2%. Its return on equity was 2.8%, down from 4.7% a year earlier. Its efficiency ratio was 78.1%, up from 68.4% a year earlier. It paid out $71 million in dividends and buybacks. The diluted share count rose 4.7%.
Return on equity is net income as a share of shareholders' equity; return on tangible equity leaves out goodwill and other intangible assets. The efficiency ratio is operating costs as a share of revenue, so lower means the bank spends less to earn each dollar. Market cap is the last closing share price times the latest diluted share count, so it is approximate. P/E is the last close divided by diluted earnings per share over the last four quarters, or the latest fiscal year where the quarters aren't available; there is none when the company made a loss.

What Hope Bancorp does
Hope Bancorp is a bank holding company in Los Angeles. Its only bank, Bank of Hope, started as a Korean-American focused bank. It now calls itself one of the largest independent commercial banks headquartered in California and serves customers of many backgrounds across the United States.
The bank earns money mainly from interest on loans and investment securities, which it funds with customer deposits and other borrowings. It also earns fees and gains on selling financial assets. Its products include commercial and commercial real estate loans, Small Business Administration loans, home mortgages and other consumer loans, treasury management, foreign currency and trade financing. Its online banking is offered in English and Korean.
Branches and loan offices are in California, New York, Texas, Hawaii, Washington, Illinois, New Jersey, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Colorado and Oregon, plus a representative office in Seoul, South Korea. On April 2, 2025, it acquired Territorial Bancorp, based in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Its biggest risks, as it describes them
- Worse credit quality in its commercial and commercial real estate loans, which would force higher loan loss provisions.
- A downturn in real estate, since many of its loans are secured by real estate.
- Local economic slowdowns in the markets where it operates.
- Fraud and cybersecurity incidents.
- Interest rate swings that change what it earns on loans and pays on deposits.
Income statement
From fiscal 2016 to 2025, earnings per share fell 8.6% a year and net income 6.6% a year, as new shares raised the share count by 23% and diluted each share's earnings.
